Teacher Background Check: Is Your Child In Safe Hands

Teacher background check is conducted for teachers which provides them a Passport to Teaching certificate. There are some authorised agents or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) which do the national background check of the candidate.

The teacher background check includes fingerprinting, based on which, the police department checks its state and national criminal records. Some schools are starting to ask for this certificate as a pre-condition before employing a teacher. Even some institutes who provide teacher training also ask for the Passport to Teaching certificate, so that their institute do not pass out any candidates who are criminally associated. Any kind of criminal record including sex, drugs or violence can result in disqualification of the candidate. The check is conducted in any case, whether a candidate is applying for a duplicate certificate or a fresh certificate.

The form for the teacher background check may ask if the candidate has any criminal background or has ever been arrested. One should tell the truth in any case. It may not be a serious crime, but filling the form dishonestly may land one in great trouble. They may be fired from their jobs, or even be subjected to a legal procedure. Some of the factors that are considered in the teacher background check are the degree of seriousness of the offense, was this his or her first criminal activity, age of the candidate at the time of the crime, how much time has passed when the crime took place, the conduct of the person before and after the crime.

The procedure for a teacher background check is as follows:

a) A law enforcement agency will take the fingerprints of the candidate including the impressions of all the ten fingers.

b) The fingerprint card is made, which has the first and last name of the candidate, his or her date and the place of birth.

c) An FBI Records letter is made, after which the fingerprint card is sent to the FBI.

d) The results of the check are sent to American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) which reviews it.

The process can take more than 12 weeks to complete. Simultaneously, one can also register for the certification examination for Passport to Teaching, and take the testing date. The records of the candidates are maintained in a confidential manner. The initial registration is sufficient to appear for the test, even if ABCTE has not passed the result of the teacher background check of the candidate.

Teachers are considered as the second parents of a child. A child spends more than half of his day with teachers. Therefore, before admitting a child into a school, the parents must check for some key points about the school. They must make sure that the school employs only the teachers whose background is checked. The teachers should be background checked at both the state and the federal level. All the teachers, including the old and the new ones should be checked. This ensures the safety of the children, as well as the reputation of the school also enhances.
